SHEBOYGAN — A local university is looking to operate a coffeehouse near Downtown Sheboygan.
Lakeland University is proposing to operate Shores Coffeehouse inside Jake’s Cafe, located at 521 Ontario Avenue in Sheboygan’s Ellis Historic Neighborhood. Currently, the space is used for events and a small cafe only open to members.
The coffee shop will serve food and drinks. The soft launch and grand opening is planned for May and will employ as many eight people according to Beth Borgen, President of Lakeland University. Shores Coffeehouse will sustain economic growth and promote small businesses, added Borgen. No renovations to the building are planned, but some new furniture, fixtures and equipment will be added according to documents filed with the City of Sheboygan.
Jake’s Cafe is named for Frank “Jake” Jacobson, who founded Jacobson Advertising and moved the business to the Ontario Avenue location in 1962. Jacobson’s son, Tryg Jacobson, joined the family business, and in 1983 joined co-worker Jon Rost to form Jacobson Rost. The renowned agency acquired adjacent buildings and expanded into the existing 20,000-square-foot building.
