Alliant Energy, WPS rates to increase
Alliant Energy and Wisconsin Public Service have submitted requests to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to increase electric and gas rates in 2026 and 2027
SHEBOYGAN — Utility rates in Sheboygan County are about to go up again if regulators approve plans submitted by the state’s largest utility companies.
Alliant Energy and Wisconsin Public Service have submitted requests to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to increase electric and gas rates in 2026 and 2027.
Alliant Energy
Alliant Energy, which provides electricity service to much of Sheboygan County, is seeking approval from the Public Service Commission to increase overall electric rates by 8.3% in 2026 and 5.7% in 2027. It is estimated the increases will bring in an additional $200 million over two years. According to Alliant Energy, the residential monthly electric bill will see an increase of $6 per month next year and another $8 per month in 2027.
A spokesperson for Alliant Energy said in a statement that the rate increase will help the Iowa-based company modernize its energy infrastructure and advance “responsible solutions” to meeting future energy demand. “Our filing consists of investments in traditional, new and renewable energy sources,” the statement said.
The utility also seeks to increase its profit rate by 0.1%.1
In 2023, Alliant Energy received approval to raise electric rates by 8.4%, phased in over 2024 and 2025.
Wisconsin Public Service
Last year, WPS received approval to increase residential electric rates by 11.52% over the next two years to cover a projected $174.4 million revenue shortfall. The utility also increased natural gas rates by 6.8% in 2025 and next year, rates will increase by 3.9%. The typical natural gas monthly bill would increase $3 to $4 per month.2
In April 2022, WKTS News reported WPS wanted to increase rates 5% to 6% in 2023.
Wisconsin Public Service and We Energies are subsidiaries of WEC Energy Group, which is based in Downtown Milwaukee.3 We Energies provides electric and natural service to all of Southeast Wisconsin, including communities in far southern Sheboygan County while WPS provides natural gas service in Sheboygan and much of Northeastern Wisconsin.
